American actor Brady Corbet debuts as a writer/director with this dense, complex and intriguing historical psychodrama all set against the backdrop of the 1919 Paris peace conference that led to the Treaty of Versailles. An apparently angelic boy’s increasing tantrums are an indicator for the rise of fascism in this elusively structured and impressively dark story, which is beautifully shot, loosely inspired by the early childhood experiences of many of the great dictators of the 20th century and punctuated by striking performances from a fine cast, that includes Robert Pattinson, Berenice Bejo, Liam Cunningham and Stacy Martin. Corbet’s debut film is a self-aware and often allusive experience that is challenging and thought-provoking, and marks him out as a directing talent to watch.
